Woman Detained at Airport After Assaulting Child on Flight Over Name-Calling Incident

Authorities at Sanford Airport took a woman into custody near the gate after reports surfaced that she repeatedly struck a child during a flight. The situation reportedly began when the child called Kristy Crampton names like “fat” and “Miss Piggy.”
Crampton was a passenger on Allegiant Flight 2885, traveling from Orlando-Sanford International Airport to Hagerstown, Maryland, on Monday, May 26. The family was returning home after a Disney World vacation.
According to eyewitnesses who spoke with law enforcement, the child remarked that Crampton couldn’t fit in the airplane seat. Following this, witnesses say Crampton started hitting the child with her fists and even struck him on the head with a water bottle. The report alleges that she forcefully pressed the child’s head against the airplane window.
The child reportedly shielded his head with his arms during the ordeal. Airport officials have not disclosed the child’s age. Crampton told police that the child had been rude and disrespectful throughout their trip. She said that after being called fat, she took the child’s phone away. She also claimed the child pushed her arm off the armrest twice, which led her to start hitting him, according to the report.
Police noted that Crampton’s actions went far beyond normal disciplinary measures. One witness described the woman’s behavior as abusive rather than corrective. The family chose not to provide statements to the authorities.
Crampton faces felony child abuse charges. She appeared before a Seminole County judge on Tuesday, May 27, who set her bond at $10,000 and prohibited any contact with the child. The FBI has also been informed about the incident.
