US Calls Out Nigerian Governors for Splurging Billions on Government Residences
The US Embassy has recently voiced serious concerns over Nigerian governors allegedly pouring billions into extravagant government houses, igniting public uproar. Several state leaders have reportedly earmarked huge budgets for renovating or building luxurious official residences and office buildings, raising eyebrows about fiscal priorities.
Among those spotlighted is Oyo State’s Governor, Seyi Makinde, whose administration approved a staggering ₦63.4 billion for refurbishing the Oyo State Government House. Not to be outdone, Gombe State’s Governor Inuwa Yahaya allocated ₦14.9 billion for a brand-new, high-end residence, alongside ₦14.23 billion for the construction of a House of Assembly complex.
The criticism isn’t limited to governors alone. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also come under fire after sanctioning ₦20 billion for a new vice-presidential residence combined with a state-of-the-art presidential jet—moves that many see as tone-deaf amid pressing national challenges.
These revelations have sparked a broad debate on governance, urging leaders to reconsider spending choices, especially when public welfare and infrastructural development remain urgent needs.
