University Professor and Vegetable Seller Encourages Youths to Embrace Small Business
Professor Nasir Hassan-Wagini from the Biology Department at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU) in Katsina State is sending a powerful message to students and young people: don’t just wait around for white-collar jobs, start small businesses instead.
In a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, the professor was spotted selling vegetables at a local market in Batsari, Katsina, sharing his unique perspective on entrepreneurship and self-reliance.
Coming from a farming background, Hassan-Wagini revealed that he began selling produce at a young age. His story gained attention after he was promoted to professor, showing that success doesn’t mean you have to give up humble beginnings.
“My advice to NCE, Diploma, and degree holders is to feel free to start small businesses in their communities instead of staying idle,” he said.
“I’m a professor of plant resources at UMYU, yet I still engage in small-scale business like this. I want young people to see my position and understand that there’s no shame in such work.
“What truly matters is what you contribute to society. So, don’t just sit at home doing nothing because you don’t have a job. Begin with small ventures like this.
“Our youths should stop chasing jobs elsewhere and instead focus on farming and other small businesses to become self-sufficient.
“Self-reliance is key to a successful life. Combine your education with vocational skills for your own benefit.”
Professor Hassan-Wagini’s inspiring example challenges the notion that success is only about white-collar jobs, encouraging youths to take charge of their futures through entrepreneurship.
