Three Nigerians Handed 96-Year Jail Term in Ghana for Car Theft
Crime may look profitable at first glance, but when justice comes knocking, the price tag is often heavier than expected. For three Nigerians in Ghana, that price turned out to be a combined 96 years behind bars after being caught up in a string of car thefts in Kumasi.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command confirmed the conviction in a statement on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. According to authorities, Francis Friday, Linus Agwazie, and Russell Ekenze were nabbed on June 20, 2025, and swiftly dragged into court to face the law. Their arrests brought relief to residents who had been troubled by vehicle theft cases across the metropolis.
During his first appearance at the Atasemanso Circuit Court, Ekenze admitted guilt and received a 10-year sentence with hard labour. Friday and Agwazie, however, tried to plead their way out but were eventually found guilty at Circuit Court 3, where each of them got slapped with an 8-year term on two counts, to run concurrently.
The story didn’t end there. All three men reappeared at Circuit Court 1 and were each handed an additional 20-year concurrent sentence on two charges. To make matters worse for Ekenze, Circuit Court 2 dished out yet another 10-year concurrent term, stacking his tally even higher. With the rulings combined, the trio will be spending a very long stretch in Kumasi Central Prison.
Police emphasized that the successful prosecution reflects their determination to crush organized and cross-border crimes. They also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities early, stressing that community cooperation is key to keeping crime in check.
