Taking Stock
Before mapping out your future plans, take a step back and reflect on a few key things about yourself:
- What skills do you have that can help you get jobs or start a business? Are you tech-savvy, a talented writer, good with numbers?
- What type of work inspires you and makes you excited to pursue it? That’s your passion area.
- Are there already open doors and contacts you can take advantage of based on your background?
- What are your personal goals – to further your education, get married, build a career?
Getting clear on your abilities, interests, opportunities and desires will make it easier to choose the right path.
Skill Up
In today’s competitive world, having an expertise that sets you apart is powerful. If you already have a skill like computing, graphic design, data analysis etc., now is the time to take it to the next level through additional training or certifications.
And if you don’t have a specialty yet, it’s not too late! Explore different skill areas that appeal to you through online courses, internships or apprenticeships. Developing a marketable skill will open up more career options.
Chase Your Passion
You’ve spent the NYSC year in service mode, now it’s time to pursue work that genuinely excites you. Maybe you’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur selling a product you believe in? Or perhaps your passion is music, art, writing or another creative field?
Don’t be afraid to follow those yearnings! Surround yourself with others in your area of interest who can guide and inspire you. Your enthusiasm and hard work can turn that passion into a rewarding career.
Seize Opportunities
With an open mind and a together attitude, you’ll start noticing opportunities all around you. Talk to as many people as possible about your goals – friends, former colleagues, mentors. Let them know the type of work you’re seeking and the value you could bring to an employer.
Having an updated, eye-catching resume ready to go is key. Tailor it to each role you’re applying for. Include:

- Work experience with achievements/results you delivered
- Skills, education, awards, projects showcasing your capabilities
- A clean, well-organized format that’s easy to scan
