Police Allegedly Splurge Over ₦22 Million on 85 Cartons of Crackers
When biscuits start costing more than gold, you know something is off. That was the reaction of many after reports surfaced about the Nigeria Police Force allegedly spending a jaw-dropping ₦22.28 million on just 85 cartons of cream cracker biscuits.
The records show that these pricey snacks were supposedly bought to keep officers fueled during operations between August and October 2023. But at a cost that could easily stock an entire supermarket, the figures have raised more than a few eyebrows.
For instance, on August 30, 2023, about ₦8.13 million was reportedly spent on 30 cartons of biscuits for security operations in Yobe State. Just over a month later, on October 4, another ₦7.07 million was shelled out for 30 cartons, with an additional ₦7.07 million spent on 25 cartons for “logistics and consumables.”
Social media lit up with witty takes. One commentator joked that the biscuits must come with police escorts and bulletproof wrappers, while another quipped about dunking ₦280k-per-carton biscuits in tea until they dissolve like old political promises. Others pointed out that the math simply doesn’t add up, calling it reckless spending at best—or something far worse at worst.
While the biscuits themselves remain unbothered, Nigerians are demanding accountability and transparency in how public funds are managed. After all, no snack, no matter how crunchy, should be eating into the national purse at such an outrageous rate.
