OAU student tragically passes away after struggling with exam results
Sadness has gripped the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, after the heartbreaking death of a Dentistry student, Ajibola Ibitayo, who reportedly ended his life following the release of his examination results.
The tragedy, which occurred on August 13, 2025, came just a day after the university released its latest academic scores. In a statement issued by the President of the Dentistry Students’ Association, Adebayo Idris, the news was described as a painful blow not only to the faculty but also to the entire student community.
The association mourned the loss of a “promising young mind” and emphasized that the incident is a sobering reminder of the unseen struggles many students battle with daily. According to the statement, his death has left classmates, lecturers, and colleagues in shock, while the void created in the faculty will not be easily filled.
Beyond the grief, the association urged students to be more attentive to one another and to prioritize mental health as much as physical health. They stressed that no one should feel isolated in moments of hardship and encouraged seeking professional support when life feels overwhelming.
While Ajibola’s passing has raised difficult questions about academic pressure and emotional well-being, it has also reignited conversations around the need for stronger support systems in universities. His story serves as both a caution and a call to action — that behind the pursuit of success, the weight of unspoken battles must never be ignored.
