NYSC Punishes Raye for Criticizing Tinubu’s Government
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has handed down a penalty to one of its members, Rita Ushie, better known as Raye, following her widely shared remarks about President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Back in March 2025, Raye voiced her frustration over Nigeria’s economic struggles in a video that quickly went viral. She labeled President Tinubu’s government as “terrible,” pointing to the soaring cost of living and accusing the administration of turning a blind eye to the hardships faced by ordinary citizens.
As a result, the NYSC called Raye to appear before a disciplinary panel at the orientation camp in Iyana Ipaja, Lagos. There, she was informed that her service year would be extended by 60 days as a consequence of her outspoken comments.
Though Raye apologized and had just a month left to complete her service, the NYSC proceeded with the sanction. This decision sparked a wave of criticism from civil rights advocates and activists.
Prominent voices such as human rights campaigner Omoyele Sowore and lawyer Festus Ogun came to Raye’s defense, denouncing the NYSC’s move as an infringement on freedom of speech and democratic rights.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions between government institutions and individuals exercising their right to express dissenting opinions.
