What was supposed to be a regular hunting trip turned into a tragic misunderstanding in Cross River State. A hunter’s aim missed the mark—both literally and figuratively—after he allegedly mistook a woman for a monkey deep in the forest.

The unsettling incident took place in Basam Osokom community, located in Boki Local Government Area. Reports indicate that the hunter, identified as Otu Goodness Kanang, was out in the forest on Monday, October 20, 2025, when he spotted what he believed to be a monkey sitting on a tree branch. Acting on impulse, he fired a shot—only to realize moments later that it wasn’t an animal he had hit.

According to witnesses, Kanang said he was horrified to hear a human cry after pulling the trigger. Upon investigating, he discovered that the victim was a woman named Victoria, whose full details were still being confirmed. The situation quickly drew the attention of local residents and security personnel.

Police have assured residents that order has been restored in the area and that the matter is being handled with the utmost seriousness. It’s a grim reminder that one moment of carelessness can forever alter multiple lives — especially when the forest keeps no second chances.
