Getting Your NYSC Certificate: What You Need to Know
The NYSC discharge certificate, also known as the Certificate of National Service, is an essential document that shows you successfully completed your one year of service. In Nigeria, most employers require this certificate before they will hire you. So getting this paper is a really big deal!
To be awarded the discharge certificate, you must have fully participated in and completed the four main NYSC programs:
1) The Orientation Course
This three-week camp at the start of service year involves drills, physical training, lectures and more. You also get to join fun activities like drama, cooking competitions, sports matches etc. It starts officially after the swearing-in ceremony.
2) The Primary Assignment
After orientation, you get posted to your primary place of assignment like a school, hospital, firm etc. You work here full-time, except for the day set aside for community service.
3) Community Development Service (CDS)
This allows you to identify and execute projects to help solve needs in your local host community – like building facilities, creating awareness campaigns and more.
4) The Passing-Out Ceremony

How to Collect the Certificate
Once you’ve finished all four programs, you can collect your precious discharge certificate through these steps:
- After the passing-out parade, submit clearance letters from your employer, CDS inspector, and NYSC ID card to zonal/LGA inspectors.
- The state certification officers will send certificates in batches 3 times yearly for qualifying corps members.
- If you took a NYSC loan, you must first complete repayment before getting the certificate.
- Anyone with pending disciplinary issues has to first get clearance.
So in summary, complete service diligently, get proper clearance, then patiently wait for your name to be worked on.
Replacing a Lost Certificate
Sadly, if you lose or damage your discharge certificate, NYSC cannot simply reprint it for you. Instead, you’d need to apply for a confirmation letter by providing:
- Police extract/report about the loss
- Court affidavit
- Letter of introduction from the state you served
- Copy of the lost certificate (if available)
Correcting Certificate Errors
Mistakes can happen when preparing the certificates based on details from the orientation camp registration. If you spot any errors on your certificate, quickly take these items to the state certification officer:
- Letter of introduction from the NYSC state secretariat
- Handwritten application
- Valid ID card
They will guide you through resolving the error, which may require a trip to the NYSC headquarters.
The most important thing is to ensure you properly wrap up your service year and get valid clearance. With that done, you’ll successfully be awarded the NYSC discharge certificate – a valuable stamp verifying your completion of national service.
