FCT Educators End Their Three-Month Walkout
After a lengthy pause in classrooms that lasted over three months, teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have finally decided to call off their strike. This development comes on the heels of a substantial payment of N16 billion owed to them, bringing a sigh of relief to students and parents alike.
The educators had initiated the strike back in March, halting academic activities due to delays in receiving their salaries. The standstill affected learning across the territory, putting pressure on authorities to find a resolution.
According to the FCT branch of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the turning point arrived on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, when the government paid the new minimum wage along with five months’ worth of back pay to the teachers. This financial gesture paved the way for the union’s decision to resume work.
Following an emergency meeting held in Abuja, the union officially announced that all primary school teachers in the FCT would return to their classrooms starting Wednesday, July 9, 2025. The union also pledged to continue pushing for the settlement of any remaining outstanding payments.
In their statement, the union emphasized the importance of resuming educational duties while maintaining efforts to resolve lingering issues. They acknowledged the role of the Honourable Minister of FCT, whose intervention on July 3, 2025, helped facilitate the recent payment and subsequent discussions.
With this strike now behind them, teachers and students alike can look forward to a return to normalcy in the Federal Capital Territory’s schools, hoping that this marks the beginning of a more stable and supportive educational environment.
