Davido Says Many African Artists Hide Their True Personalities
Afrobeats sensation David Adeleke, more widely known as Davido, has shared what he believes sets him apart from other African artists when it comes to social media presence. According to him, the key lies in keeping it real.
While chatting in a recent BET Talks interview, Davido revealed that his laid-back, transparent nature online is what’s earned him the title of the most-followed African musician across digital platforms. He credits this popularity to his early efforts of letting fans into his world through vlogs and casual interactions.
“I think the reason I’m leading in followers is because I’ve always been open with my fans,” he said. “Right from the start, I shared my day-to-day life. Meanwhile, many Nigerian and African artists tend to be afraid of revealing who they really are.”
The singer also noted that his time living in the United States helped shape his mindset. While he was quick to defend his fellow artists, saying they’re not ignorant, he believes many overthink their public image. “Let’s be honest—how many of them would post a photo at home in shorts and slippers? Most would rush to change into something ‘camera-worthy.’ But I still see myself as a normal guy. If I’m chilling, I dress like I’m chilling. When it’s time to party, though, I know how to bring the energy.”
Davido hinted that upon returning to Nigeria, he noticed a trend among some celebrities who overdo things to maintain a polished persona. His advice? Keep it simple. “There’s nothing wrong with just going with the flow. That’s how it should be,” he added.
Clearly, authenticity has worked wonders for Davido—and he’s got the follower count to prove it.
