Comedian Acapella Says He Was Threatened for Backing Claims That Lagos Has an Odor Problem

Comedian Acapella recently shared that he faced a wave of threats after calling out Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, over his response to claims that Lagos has a noticeable smell.

The controversy kicked off when popular influencer Scott Iguma posted a viral video alleging that Lagos emits an unpleasant odor and is plagued by “big mosquitoes.” In defense of the state, Commissioner Wahab argued that some people moving to Lagos from other states are intentionally trying to damage the city’s reputation by spreading negative stories on social media, accusing them of undermining Lagos’s development.

Acapella fired back, accusing the commissioner of bias, pointing out what he sees as double standards based on ethnicity and state of origin. This sparked a heated back-and-forth online, with Acapella and supporters of the Lagos State government trading barbs.

Taking to his social media handle on Tuesday, Acapella revealed that the backlash included several threatening direct messages and phone calls. He responded firmly, emphasizing unity among Nigerians regardless of background.

He stated, “Over the past few days, as expected, I’ve received numerous DMs and a handful of calls with empty threats here and there. But let me be clear: No Nigerian is more Nigerian than any other. Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking you’re betraying the country when you highlight the challenges we face as a nation.

The first step to fixing any problem is admitting there’s a problem. We are all we have. With these few words, I’ll leave my case for now.”

Acapella’s bold stance highlights the tension that arises when difficult truths meet passionate patriotism, reminding everyone that recognizing issues is the starting point for progress.
