Akwa Ibom Village Head Arrested for Shooting Sister During Dispute
A family feud took a shocking turn in Akwa Ibom as a traditional ruler was arrested for allegedly shooting his own sister during a heated argument over palm fruits. What began as a domestic quarrel escalated into violence, leaving an entire community stunned and the police scrambling to investigate.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Chief Friday Jonah Umoren, the village head of Ibagwa in Abak Local Government Area. DSP Timfon John, spokesperson for the command, revealed that officers received an emergency report around 2:30 p.m. of an attempted murder in Ibagwa. The victim, identified as 32-year-old Unwana Effiong Friday Inyang, was reportedly shot in the head and immediately rushed to a hospital, where she is now said to be in stable condition.
According to the police, the report came from another family member who accused the chief of deliberately firing the shot during the confrontation. Officers who arrived at the scene recovered a long, single-barrel gun believed to have been used in the attack. The suspect was swiftly taken into custody and is currently facing interrogation as investigations continue.
The case has sent ripples through the community, not only because of the act itself but also because of the suspect’s position as a custodian of local customs and order. Residents remain in shock, while authorities stress that no one, regardless of title or influence, is above the law.
