Enugu Police Nab Suspects Linked to Shrine Killings, Rescue 13-Year-Old Girl; Chief Ezeani Still at Large
The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three men allegedly involved in ritual-related crimes tied to a well-known local spiritualist, Chief Levi Onyeka Obu—more notoriously known as Ezeani or, as he prefers, ‘E-Dey-Play-E-Dey-Show.’ While the self-styled high chief remains on the run, his alleged sidekicks are now behind bars, and, most crucially, a 13-year-old girl believed to have been marked for ritual purposes has been rescued.
In a statement released on May 28, police spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe detailed the operation, which took place in the early hours of May 27. Working closely with neighborhood watch groups and community members, officers from the Umumba Division swooped in at about 3:15 a.m. on a property located in Umuojor village, Ishiagu, Ezeagu LGA.
What they uncovered was a chilling scene worthy of a horror script. Inside an uncompleted building believed to be used as a shrine, two decomposed bodies—a man and a woman—were found buried in a concrete-sealed pit. The site, according to investigations, served as a base for gruesome rituals allegedly orchestrated by the fugitive native doctor.
Three suspects arrested at the scene—Uche Kingsley Agumba (33), Ilo Nweze Onyedikachi (36), and Ejike Odinwankpa (38)—are believed to have played active roles in the nefarious acts. The rescued girl, whose name has been withheld for her protection, was reportedly just moments away from facing the same horrifying fate as the buried victims.
The Enugu State Government wasted no time acting on the horror unearthed. Structures owned and used by the prime suspect for his shady dealings were swiftly demolished in line with existing state laws, cutting off any potential return to business as usual.
Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, who personally visited the crime scene, applauded the synergy between law enforcement, local vigilantes, and the community. He has now ordered an all-out hunt to track down Ezeani and any other accomplices who may still be lurking in the shadows.
Authorities remain committed to ensuring justice for the victims and their families—and are determined that no amount of mystical bravado will shield the perpetrators from the long arm of the law.
