It seems even politics can sometimes take a surprising twist of reason. Former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, has opened up about the one condition that could make him throw his support behind a Christian-Christian presidential ticket in Nigeria — a topic that never fails to stir national debate.

Bashir, who once served under the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, shared his thoughts while engaging with a curious user on X. When asked whether he would ever accept a Christian-Christian ticket, he replied with refreshing candor that he would, but only under one specific circumstance.

According to him, his loyalty lies not with religion but with competence. If the political party he belongs to presents two Christian candidates whom he genuinely believes are the best fit to lead the country, he said, “Why not?”

His comment quickly rekindled memories of the controversy that erupted back in 2022 when the ruling party presented a Muslim-Muslim ticket, pairing Bola Tinubu with Kashim Shettima. The decision triggered a heated national conversation about religious balance in leadership, especially among Nigeria’s diverse population.

Interestingly, Ahmad’s statement presents a calm and rational approach to the matter, focusing more on leadership quality than religious background. It’s a refreshing take in a political climate where religion often overshadows merit. While some applauded his openness, others wondered whether such objectivity could ever survive the heat of real-world politics.

For now, Bashir Ahmad’s response has sparked new dialogue on whether Nigeria might someday prioritize capability over creed — or whether such an ideal remains just that, an ideal.
